Guidelines regarding research projects

The National Commission for Bioethics and Technoethics does NOT have, by law, the competence or mandate to approve research projects.

For your convenience, we inform you that:

  • If you are collaborating with a Greek university or public research institution, you may request approval from the relevant Research Ethics Committee.
  • If you are collaborating with a hospital, you may request ethics approval from the Scientific Council (or the Ethics Committee, if one exists).
  • In the case of clinical trials, approval is required from the National Ethics Committee for Clinical Trials of the National Organization for Medicines (EOF).
  • If the research involves gametes or embryos, approval is required from the Hellenic Authority for Medically Assisted Reproduction.

In all other cases (e.g. private research, etc.), the legislation does not provide for an approval procedure. However, if you collect personal data, you must comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and, where applicable, a Data Protection Officer (DPO) must be appointed.
