[19-06-2019] PRESS RELEASE

On the completion of 20 years since the founding of the Hellenic National Bioethics Commission of Greece, the Commission held a conference at the Senate Hall at the Hellenic Parliament on Friday the 14th of June 2019, under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Republic. The title of the conference was “Human Value and Commercialization of the Human Body. The Bioethical Challenge in the 21st Century.”

The chair of the Commission, Assistant Professor of the Law School of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, Eleni Rethymiotaki, in her introductory speech, after referring to the diverse contribution of the Commission in the two decades of its running, pointed to the relevance of the topic of the conference, given the progress of technology and the direct interest of our economy in the field of bioethics.

The keynote speaker, representative of the Council of Europe, Dr. Katrin Uerpmann, presented the general context within which the activities of the international organization take place with regard to the protection of the human body from undesired practices of commercialization.

The crucial ethical, social, and legal issues which arise in fields such as transplantations, assisted reproduction, stem cell banks, clinical trials of pharmaceuticals, genetic tests, patents in biotechnology and others, were presented by reputable speakers with international academic and research experience.

The conference ended with the honorary lecture of the President of the Hellenic Republic, with the title: “The Constitutional Safeguarding of Human Value and its Impact on Bioethics.”

Young scientists and researchers from different disciplines attended the conference and contributed to a fruitful scientific dialogue which is a sign of great interest in harmonizing the fundamental values of a modern society with the evolution of science and technology. This work has been undertaken to promote, first of all, Bioethics Commissions on a global scale.
